Black America: Portsmouth, Virginia

By Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander, Mae Breckenridge-Haywood, and the African American Historical Society of Portsmouth

African Americans in Portsmouth built a strong, insulated community because they were cognizant of the need to look inward.  They formed banks, provided recreational facilities, gave sanctuary to congregants in their churches and thus created one of the most stable middle-class communities in America.  Early 20th century leaders such as Dr. William Reid, Nancy T. Wheeler, Ida B. Barbour, and Rev. Harvey N. Johnson, Sr. were civic models for a community emerging from the ravages of slavery. ISBN 0-7385-1581-7

Alumni historian Mae Breckenridge-Haywood is one of the co-authors of this excellent book. Purchase Portsmouth, Virginia (Black America Series) online or call this toll free number:1-888-313-2665 to get your copy today!
